Remember the two debaters were  running for U.S. Senator, representing Illinois.  The big issue of the time was the expansion of slavery.  Stephen Douglas was a nationally known Democrat senator.  Abraham Lincoln was an Illinois lawyer from Central Illinois with no national recognition.
