Picture #1--This is a photo of the 1858 Coles County (Illinois) Courthouse and jail.  this structure was present during the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Questions #-- 31 32 33  34  35  36  37  38  39  40 

 

Picture #2-- This is a very old photo of the Coles County Fairgrounds on the west side of Charleston.  This would be the side of a Lincoln-Douglas Debate in 1858. Questions #-- 1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9  10 

 

Picture #3-- This is a political cartoon depicting the Copperheads Political Group. Charleston was the scene of a riot during the Civil War.  It involved the Copperhead Radicals and a group of Union soldiers on leave in Charleston. The President would get involved in this event from the Executive Mansion.

Picture #4-- This is the Dr. Rutherford House in Oakland, Illinois.  Dr. Rutherford was an abolitionist, and helped protect slaves on a farm near his home.  The trial was the Matson Slave Trial.  Lincoln was the slave owner lawyer, and would lose this famous case.  Questions #-- 21  22  23  24  25  26  27  28  29  30
