LINCOLN "SPRINGFIELD" YEARS AND HIS CAREERS
Abraham Lincoln was the lawyer for the Illinois Central Railroad and the common man on the 8th Circuit. Advice to him from William H. Grigsby, a man who hoped to join Lincoln's law partnership. It reads:
"If you wish to be a lawyer, attach no consequence to the place you are in, or the person you are with; but get books, sit down anywhere and go to reading for yourself."
